Thanks for making great rolls for us to enjoy - Mark Williams [Slow Drag Blues & others]
Followup to Columbia O-673 Sloe Drag Blues recut by Stephen Kent Goodman
This roll was reconstructed by arranging the first 5 missing tunes and reproducing the latter 5 original tunes.
I bought and played the roll and I can testify that a good job was done with the arranging and the recutting quality.
There are blues tunes on this roll that so far have not appeared on any other existing O-roll (you can check at the
Rollography at http://www.rickcrandall.net/operators-o-roll-rollography/ I’ve recorded the tunes on my Coinola SO
and I think Stephen is going to post them somewhere on the Web. He’s got some copies for sale at http://Gnaw-Vol-ty.com/
- Rick Crandall [ You can hear the SO playing Slow Drag Blues on the Audio page under Samples]
Your Mex roll arrived yesterday and it is simply DELIGHTFUL! We have 2 other
Mexican music rolls but yours is the best! - Alan Fox
Just played the newly received roll (Haunted Halloween "A" ) on my Seeburg L. Great sound.
Wonderful scoring. I think one of the best arrangements was the Munsters theme.
This is an excellent roll. I play it on my 43-note circus (air)
calliope. (Haunted Halloween "A" Roll)
North Central Ohio
We play this roll on our Nelson-Wiggen 6X in the train station at
a theme park in Anaheim during the Halloween season. The number
of plays more than double while this roll is on the Nelson-Wiggen.
A lot of the interest comes from the crew that work in the area.
I have been told some have brought rolls of quarters to work with
them in the past. (Haunted Halloween "A" roll).
Mikey Mills :
The roll is excellent; I would recommend it to anyone owning a nickelodeon. It's real crowd-pleaser for the young. Finally
-- tunes they know! Hope the "G" roll version is also recut.
Marc J. Sachnoff: "Great job on this roll (Haunted Halloween "A" roll). I’m really enjoying it. I look forward to your future arrangements." The Haunted
Halloween "A" roll has become a real favorite with our friends and visitors. I highly recommend it. It's a group of fine arrangements with some great surprises for folks young and old. It really gives our old Seeburg a workout.
Brian Wenzinger : " Finally got to listen to the new G roll briefly (Ragtime You Can't Live Without!). I guess I’ll quote my youngest (Dad, that’s a great roll!). Well, she’s right great roll, lots of expression/character, snappy tunes! A winner for sure and I thought your other 2 G rolls (I’m biased for on one) were the best ever. I’m up to 10 or more plays of that new G roll, and it just sings. That first tune hooks you and sucks you in til the rewind. Love the expression and it just sings on my G. Just wow, I can’t walk away when I drop a nickel in."
Al Menashe: " That roll (Sizzling Screamers!) is the absolute best in the world. Since I bought it 6 mo. ago. It has never left my machine and I play it almost daily. Just thought you would want to know. AL"
Brian Wenzinger: (Haunted Halloween "A" roll version) "Had a chance to listen to the Halloween A roll this weekend, really nice adaptation and I’m glad I own both, they are sufficiently different to make them both enjoyable to own!
Paul B, Australia writes: "...I've just finished listening to the roll (57 Varieties) for the 6th time. Love it..."
Geoff Nudell, Professional Musician and Jazz Authority says about 57 Varieties. "...(this) retains all of the transparent and floating yet driving rhythmic pulse that is so quintessential to Mr. Hines' performace. Bravo again!! I can't wait to hear more!!"
Famous Ragtime Piano Player and Expert Dick Zimmerman had this to say about That Phantom of the Opera, A Ragtime Nightmare. “It’s a terrific rag with a killer arrangement…a”must have” for all piano roll collectors.”
Robbie Rhodes, Editor of the Mechanical Music Digest says this about 57 Varieties. "On hearing the short audio sample, I think Mr. Goodman has done an excellent job. It should be possible for a pianolist at a responsive player piano to sound very much like Hines himself playing!"
Gordon Mackie, piano roll collector/music critic:
"I am impressed by the high-quality of the rolls themselves and how well they play on my player with an older restoration. Mr. Goodman in my opinion
is John Philip Sousa, Scott Joplin and Herman Avery Wade all in one person!"
Mechanical Musical Instrument Collector JU: “Wish that you would make rolls out of every one of your compositions… you are the greatest…”
