As part of a trade, I received a small library of well-played original style "O" rolls from a former collector, in his late eighties.
Part of the lot included a roll that was missing the first five tunes which had been removed presumably due to damage.
The roll had literally been played to death.
Playing thru the tunes that remained, I was amazed at this particular "half a roll", due to the quality of early blues that were on it- all five surviving tunes were the real Chicago blues from the early '20s. It suddenly transported me to a speakeasy filled with cigar smoke and the smell of cheap whiskey and gin. This was the real stuff that was played back then!
I wanted to find out what this roll originally had on it, so I contacted Rick Crandall who has compiled a list of every "O" roll every punched. Rick informed me that I was in possession of half of the only known copy of this particular blues roll to exist! I inquired as to the tune line-up of the entire 10-tune roll and he graciously sent me the roll number and the missing tune titles. Kelly researched the tunes that were cut from the roll, and after many hours, came up with them in a multitude of formats; ranging from mp3 files of original phonograph records, to original sheet music of them, etc.
Proceeding to pour over the missing tunes, I began to think about arranging them in the same style (or as close as I could speculate) as the balance of tunes on the half-roll I owned.
After months of work, I arrived at what I think what are pretty fair arrangements of those formerly missing tunes.
Now, a limited edition of this extraordinary blues roll; a roll previously unknown to modern collectors, is being offered by Gnaw-Vol-Ty to the first come, first served only. Depending upon demand, there are currently no plans to cut it again in the future. And as with all of our roll offerings, they will not remain sitting in stock. Once we are sold out, the roll will be removed from our offering on this site.
Don't procrastinate. Order your copy now and start enjoying "the real stuff" on your O-roll instrument!
