During the original ragtime era (1898-1917), to parody what were considered the sacred strains of serious music, operatic themes, was a common practice amongst ragtime composers. It was that era's equivalent of what would be known as "jazzin up" a classical them in years to come; much to the disdain of serious "high-class" musicians and aficionados. That Phantom of the Opera, A Ragtime Nightmare (1992) not only continues in this less than charming tradition, but I have also chosen to "ragify" only the most poignant and emotionally-charged themes of certain operas I knew- gleefully stringing them together in this parody to end all operatic parodies. Themes which are musically murdered in the tradition of truly "tragic" opera include quotes from Andrew Lloyd Weber's "The Phantom of the Opera", operas such as "I, Pagliacci" and "Magic Fire Music" from "Die Walkyrie" are cheerfully desecrated with typical ragtime irreverence.
