Buffalo Soldiers - March by Stephen Kent Goodman for concert or wind band.

This march pays tribute to the African American men who served our country in the 9th and 10th Cavalry and in the four all African American infantry regiments organized in 1866. These brave men fought in the Indian campaigns in the Great Plains; where they were given their nickname “Buffalo Soldiers” by Native Americans. It was based on the buffalo coats they wore in the winter and their black curly hair resembled that of the Buffalo. They also fought alongside Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders in the Spanish American War. Next they saw 4 tours of duty in the Philippine Islands and came home to go with General Pershing as he pursued Villa. The Buffalo Soldiers continued to serve their country until 1951, when President Truman’s orders to eliminate racial segregation were carried out in the armed forces and the Buffalo Soldiers were disbanded. /s/ Stephen Kent Goodman
